Home of the Free (from Monthly Monitoring Fees)

As discussed elsewhere in my blog, and great many people ask, “Can I get rid of my alarm company? I see all the same devices on your website. I’d like to just monitor it myself.”

The first thing I’d suggest is to look at WHY you want to self monitor. Are you trying to save a buck? If that’s the case, then maybe you should check to see if your insurance company has an horse in this race. A lot of home insurers offer rebates for those property owners to have monitored alarm systems on site. You may not be saving as much as you think.

If the WHY answer to your cancelling your alarm company is more self-reliance, then the cost doesn’t matter. You may want to depend less on the local police, and more on stopping burglaries or petty crimes yourself. Like a fire plan, a contingency plan for such an awful event has to be thought through.

So, you’ve decided to kick off the chains of the local alarm provider. What other services do they provide to you? Phone? Cable? What contracts did you sign to allow installation in your home. Is there a time restraint? Are you even allowed to keep the devices you plan on using?

Being your own person with no ties to a monitoring system can be very rewarding, but there is a lot to think about. We’ve been thinking about this for a while now, and can help you once you’ve given serious consideration to the many facets of the decision.
