How exactly does a Z-Wave smoke detector work?

In a smart home, devices – like the Z-Wave smoke detector – operate on a unique wireless network that’s not the same as an Internet WIFI signal. The Z-Wave network is lightweight but strong, designed to connect to a range of home appliances, including lights, sprinkler systems, locks, and sensors. A centralized “hub” serves as the brain of the smart home, gathering information and alerts from each device and then forwarding relevant data along to the user, who views it via his or her smart device.

The Z-Wave smoke detector will begin to self-monitor as soon as it’s installed, alerting you to low batteries or, of course, smoke or carbon monoxide in the air. You’ll install a simple app, which will connect your smart device to the hub, enabling easy receipt of alerts and updates.
