How exactly does an automated home system work, and how do I get started?

In the smart home of today, smart devices “talk” to each other by sending messages through a wireless network to what’s called a hub, or controller. A range of automated home options are available to today’s homeowner, but the majority of home automation systems run on a lightweight wireless network that won’t interfere with your WIFI signal.

So, the first thing to do is set up a wireless network, which, with today’s technology, you may be able to do yourself. With Z-Wave’s smart technology, for example, an extremely lightweight wireless signal serves to connect the entire home – and is simple enough for most users to self-install. However, you can always reach out to the Internet for installation advice and troubleshooting, and most home service providers, like Verizon, can also assist with installation.

Once the wireless network is installed, you’ll hook up the controller or hub, which will work as the heart of your smart home, delivering messages from devices to you via your smart phone or tablet. When the controller is up and running, be able to add devices one by one, from dimmers and switches to motion sensors, smart cameras, water valves, and more. Your devices will be able to detect when you’re home or not, and will be able to act accordingly, turning on lights and raising the temperature, say, when you enter the front door. With a smart home, you’ll never need to run home from work to turn down the heat.
